A quote I can stand behind!

Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” James Baldwin

I believe the door to true happiness…is to know yourself. That means deal with issues, accept them and overcome them…as well embracing things you may have not liked about yourself! Who cares if you have big hips or you talk a lot sometimes (uh…I would be talking about myself)…that is part of who you are and which makes you a perfect you!

Let go of the shit and embrace the stuff!

Just do nothing and enjoy it…no guilt, no stress, no nothing!

Watch an old silly movie, read a book, lay in the sun, pet your cat, cuddle with a loved one…you can figure out what your best nothing is…and do it…nothing that is!

And I have nothing else to say about it…except there is a hammock calling my name!

Reach out and touch someone! Not that way, you freaks!

Call your Mom, email your best friend, poke someone on Facebook, bring cookies to your neighbors, send a card in the real mail to your great aunt…however you do it…just reach out.

From On the Street After World Cup Qualifying Games

We all need someone, so you not only get something out of reaching out, but the other person does too.

I am reacher-outer to the umpteenth degree and I am so open to people reaching out to me! If you want to…reach out to me…sometimes strangers are better than anyone else!

Here is a challenge for you!

Smile to everyone you pass today and if you are extra chipper…work up to saying, “Hi!” with that smile.

From Jim's B-day 2009

I used to walk to work a couple of miles and I would try different techniques and the more you do…the more you get back. Smiles sometimes gets smiles…but words will almost always get you at least a “Hi” back!

I dare you (said with a big smile on my face) to try it today!

From Casa del Nino at Water Jungle!

There are so many positive motivating quotes out there, but I will share with you the two that I have been living by.

The first one came to many years ago and I have no idea when, where or how…but I am glad I heard or read it!

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” – John Lennon

I say it differently: “Life is What is Happening as You Plan for It!” Meaning that you should live life to the fullest and do not put things off that make you happy, and that life is short! Ha, I used a couple more quotes there!

My favorite quote came to me by way of a 15-year-old boy! I was leaving a job where I worked with youth and he gave me a going away gift. It was a magnet with a quote on it. What that 15-year-old boy did not know is how much I needed that quote at that point in my life, and how much he impacts my life everyday.

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

From Isla Ometepe – Nic Trip – June 09

I love love love that quote!

At another cross-road in my life I met two separate women at different times, but both doing what they always wanted to do. And their advice is something we all have heard a million times, but those words never hit me until I really needed them.

“Follow Your Heart” – “Go with your Gut” – “Listen to your Heart” – “Never Ignore a Gut Feeling”

I hope all these words hit you when you need them too!

From Roatan with the Js – Dec. 2008

Now go follow your gut while leaving a trail that you did not plan for!

If you do not have kids, borrow one! If you do, spend some special time with your child.

From Casa del Nino – Mendels Volunteer Day

Uh, If you are legally not allowed to be with children, let your inner child out far far away from city parks, school yards and day care centers.

I know there may be a chance of melt downs or attitude, but if you pick the right activity I am sure there will be smiles, happiness, laughter and positiveness…from both of you.

Okay, I must admit, I am not a parent, but I am one heck of a super-dooper Auntie, older friend to my friend’s kids, and worker with children. Matter of fact, just this past weekend I participated in a 2nd grader’s “Book Club.” I so enjoyed reading a story about Weenie Witch and then writing my own short story after a nice snack of humus on a piece of tortilla and a cheese stick. How can you walk away from that activity without smiling?

Now, I am in some kind of kid wonder land, I know you parents need time to yourself.

But you also need, quality time, with the little ones. Make special time doing something new or something your child loves. I love stories from my parent friends and family about such times. And I know, at that moment, they can not be more proud and happy that they are parents!

From Jim’s B-day 2009

So, go make a date…with a child!

Here are some ideas on things you can do with your/borrowed child:

- Ride a bike all dressed in red while making Cardinal bird noises.
- Coordinate and participate in a house band (instruments made only from household items), including writing and performing a song about household items.
- Take photos of tree trunks only while dressed like trees in between games of hide and seek in your local park.
- Video tape the reaction of people driving and walking by your house after you tell them “Our bodies have been switched!” Make sure you are dressed appropriately for your “switched” roles!

and my favorite…

- Go to a nice restaurant and eat only with your fingers, but do so nicely as possible.

Being with a child gives you the opportunity to be a child again! Let that inner child out!

PS…
Also, since I have run mentoring programs, worked with Big Brother’s Big Sister’s and coordinated dozens of youth programs, I must add, if you are single, seriously think about becoming a mentor. I swear, sometimes the mentor gets so much more out of the relationship than the child. But we all know every child needs a good role model.

“Get out,” not as in the response one would get if they said, “I can breathe fire!”

But “get out,” as in get out and do something out of the norm, try something new, “get out” of your comfort zone! As an overused phrase from advertisement for over-priced athletic shoes once said, “Just Do It!”

Also, just “get out” as it is Spring time and the air is getting warmer, the flowers are starting to bloom, and the clothes are getting more colorful, so “get out” and enjoy them all!

From CA Flowers

I say DO A DOUBLE “Get Out”…do something new while you are outside!

- Knit in the park,
- Go to a drive-in movie theater and act out the scenes,
- Color Easter eggs on the front lawn (and it keeps the kitchen clean),
- Dance around the first flower you come across,
- Do your taxes on the deck,
- Perform cartwheels in the parking lot,
- Paint in the pool (or if needed, paint the pool),
- Add ram to your computer under a tree
- Learn origami while fishing off a pier,
- Walk backwards to work,
- Take a train to the Basketball Hall of Fame,
- Read your emails backwards while paddle boating

And my favorite, but

- Teach a child to boogie oogie oogie ‘til they just can’t boogie no more!

NOW GET AND OUT AND JUST DO IT!

Make today a laughing contest! See how many laughs or people you can make laugh today.

Laughing is quite the mood lifter, but I am sure the amount of people you make laugh by break dancing in the middle of the office, will lift you even more!

From Last Day at Casa del Nino

Go crazy!

Make up a new voice! Tell jokes! Walk around the office in runway model-stomp fashion…with the turns and poses! Put food on your front teeth and start chatting with your neighbor! Practical joke your heart away! Make funny faces!

Make it A Laughing Day!

Well, 9 ways to be happy according to Real Simple magazine.

I read the January issue while working out last week and liked these “ways.”

I was thinking of stretching these 9 ways out in several blogs…but that is just not nice to the person who really wants the answer to biggest question in life, “What will make me happy?”

Here’s to your happiness!

1. CHILL OUT: Literally, cold weather can improve your mood. And of course, the relaxing sense of the words “chill out” is a good idea too. Although people in winter wonderlands, like myself, may be done with the cold now…but I tell you a day doing an activity outside on a cold day does make me feel refreshed!

From BBBS Ice Fishing Day

2. REMEMBER WHENCE YOU CAME: I agree…just last week I went in search of photos of myself of the 80′s and had such a great time. Now my husband is knee-deep in his old photos. Think about the things you like from your past. Since I did not change my name when I got married, a lot of very old friends find me easy enough on Facebook. I tell you, people who I did not know well or felt were more popular than me have found me and asked me to be friends. Now, that feels good!

From 2011-04 (Apr)

3. DON’T DWELL: Let it go and do not mull over negative things from your past or failures from days gone by. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them. Alexander Pope once said, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” So, my take on that to make mistakes is just being a perfect human, and to forgive yourself makes you that much better!

4. SPREAD THE WEALTH: Give, give, give. If you do not have money to give, volunteer your time. You not only help others, you help yourself by feeling good about doing good!

From Last Day at Casa del Nino

5. Eat A SNACK EVERYDAY AT 2:00PM: A healthy snack would be much better than a candy bar. An apple a day at 2pm keeps the dulls away!

From Farmer’s Marketing Opening/May Day – Brattleboro

6. GET A MOVE ON: Do some kind of cardio exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 days a week. You all know why this is good for your health, but it is also good for your mental health!

From Austin & Turner Volunteering at Casa del Nino

7. LIMIT YOUR OPTIONS: Too many options can be very overwhelming. Whether you are decided about where to go to dinner or where to save your money for retirement, limiting the choices will make the decision so much easier to make. My husband has been bugging me to invest some money and the world of invest has overwhelmed me for so long, I have not done anything with that money for 3 years now. But after asking someone for advice, and oddly enough, after seeing an article in the same Real Simple Magazine about Index Funds…that is where I am going to limit my research. I now feel I can do it!

8. START A HOBBY/JOIN A CLUB: Find something that occupies 100% of your time while you are doing it. And if you join a club that does the same hobby is tons better – whether in person or online. Doing something that takes you away, but also brings you together with like-minded people is the key!

From Beading day at Casa Del Nino – April 2009

AND…

9. MAKE YOUR BED: Complete at least one “everyday” task a day, and the more the better. Even if you did not write that novel you have been thinking about, at least you did the dishes! I learned this years ago from a friend that at the time was the mother of 3 young girls. She said, “If I at least make the beds every day, I feel good.”

From Recycle Robot Day

What I mean is giving of yourself by volunteering…and the positivity will pour from your pores!

It is a two-way street…you are helping in some way but in return you feel so good about it and yourself!

You can also give monetarily if your time is limited, as all those non-profits and charities need the money to survive! Giving in any way we can is the key.

And if possible, give your time AND your money!  And I promise you, you will begin to beam positive vibes from every orifice, the heavens will open up and angels will fall singing in your honor!  Okay…maybe the second part won’t happen, but you will glow from the giving for sure!

In my world, no amount is too little…so free yourself of those constraints and give give give!

What you do on your side the of the world, may give a child the opportunity to smile and be happier on the other side of the world.
